The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO
represents approximately 1.5 million members throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Panama.
AFSCME is the largest union of public sector and health care workers in the country. AFSCME's
Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice to the Union's headquarters in Washington,
D.C., to its local bodies, and is active in federal and state litigation.
In addition to traditional issues of labor and employment law, the Office confronts issues of constitutional law (e.g., First Amendment, Due Process), contract law (e.g., enforcement and drafting), and separation of powers issues. The Office of the General Counsel also provides substantial assistance to the UnionŐs organizing and legislative departments in developing strategies and drafting legislation.
