Founded in 1972, the Asian Law Caucus is the nation's oldest legal and civil rights organization serving low-income Asian Pacific American communities. The Caucus has strived to defend and empower the Asian Pacific American community through the provision and delivery of direct legal services, strategic impact litigation and community education and organizing.
The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the largest Asian Pacific American populations in the nation. Since 1980, over 40% of the new Asian immigrants have settled in California. Many Asian immigrants, especially monolingual or limited English speakers are extremely vulnerable to exploitation by their employers especially in areas such as the garment, restaurant, and construction industries. Often, these immigrants work below the minimum wage and without overtime pay. The Caucus' Employment/Labor Project has successfully advocated on behalf of Asian American workers on issues such as wage and hour violations and employment discrimination. The projects have helped decrease sweatshop conditions, improve wages and working conditions and educate workers. The Caucus also sponsors a legal clinic twice each month to provide advice, referral and representation to workers. The Peggy Browning Fund summer intern would receive strong supervision, guidance and support from the supervisor of its Employment Labor Project. Students interested in applying to Asian Law Caucus, Inc for a Peggy Browning Fund internship should submit an application to:
