The Chicago Newspaper Guild is a labor union dedicated to protecting the rights of
employees employed primarily in the newspaper industry in the Chicago metropolitan area.
The Guild has represented reporters, editors, photographers and other newspaper employees
for over sixty (60) years. When needed, the Guild's legal counsel also represents locals
in other Midwestern markets in conjunction with the international union in Washington, D.C.
(The Newspaper Guild/CWA).The Guild's legal counsel negotiates and litigates over the terms
and working conditions for the various collective bargaining agreements it administers.
A Peggy Browning Fund summer intern's assignments will include research and writing, counseling and interacting with Guild members about legal issues. Specifically, a summer intern will help in a variety of tasks, including brief and memo writing; witness and case preparation for cases before the NLRB, federal court and arbitrations; and assisting the Guild in negotiating collective bargaining agreements. The intern will attend legal proceedings, grievance meetings, Guild bargaining unit meetings, collective bargaining negotiations and participate in any organizing campaigns. During the course of assignments, interns will have direct contact with the Guild's staff representatives and Guild officers. The General Counsel will directly supervise the intern.
