District 1 of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) covers New York, New Jersey and New England. It is the largest CWA district and represents almost 200,000 workers including private and public sector workers in telecommunications, healthcare, manufacturing, education, as well as numerous other fields and industries. CWA District 1 is progressive and militant and the District 1 Legal Department performs a variety of legal tasks in support of the District's programs and the policing of its collective bargaining agreements.
The District 1 Legal Department performs a wide variety of legal tasks including research and writing of legal memoranda, participating in discussions of legal strategy, arbitrating both discharge and contract interpretation cases, representing the union at various agencies including the NLRB, OCB, PERB, and representing the union in both State and Federal courts. Areas of labor and employment law a law clerk might be asked to research include the NLRA, ADA, FMLA, Title VII and related civil rights statues, as well as public sector labor law in New York City and New York State. Additionally, CWA law clerks usually get the opportunity to attend at least one arbitration hearing during the summer.
Applicants for this position should possess a demonstrated interest in the labor and employment field, with a particular emphasis on representing working people and labor unions as well as strong research and writing skills.
This is a summer position, with a possibility of part-time work during the academic year (if feasible). The pay is approximately $20 per hour. 2Ls are preferred but 1Ls with prior union or comparable worker advocacy experience should also apply.
