The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO represents approximately 1.4 million members throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, primarily in the public sector and health care industry. AFSCME's Office of the General Counsel, located in Washington, D.C., provides legal advice to the Union's officers and directors, as well as its affiliated Councils and local unions, and is active in federal and state litigation.
In addition to traditional issues of labor and employment law, the Office confronts issues of constitutional law (federal and state) and contract law (e.g., enforcement and drafting). The Office of the General Counsel also provides substantial assistance to the Union's organizing and legislative departments in developing strategies and drafting legislation.
Students interested in applying for a Peggy Browning Fund Summer Fellow position should possess excellent research and writing skills, demonstrated academic excellence, and a serious commitment to social justice.
AFSCME will provide additional compensation to the Peggy Browning Fund Fellow beyond the normal ten-week stipend of $4,500. AFSCME plans to hire two Peggy Browning Summer Fellows in 2012 (and possibly a third).
In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a legal writing sample.
