CLEAN Carwash Campaign
United Steelworkers and AFL-CIO
Los Angeles, CA
CLEAN stands for Community-Labor-Environmental Action Network and is a diverse coalition of labor, immigrant rights, community, religious, and student organizations that supports the organizing efforts of carwash workers who are fighting for better wages, working conditions, and dignity and respect on the job. Carwash workers have formed the Carwash Workers Organizing Committee of the United Steelworkers (CWOC-USW) to organize and win union recognition by carwash employers.
The Peggy Browning Fellow will help serve as the link between the campaign's attorneys, carwash workers, and union organizers and will communicate information about violations to attorneys and enforcement agencies. The Fellow will conduct interviews with workers and organizers to identify potential employment law, labor law and health and safety violations at worksites, and refer workers to appropriate legal counsel. The Fellow will also assist in coordinating worker meetings with attorneys, tracking and charting carwash worker cases, including hearings, court dates, and statutes of limitation deadlines. The Fellow may also assist in developing materials and trainings to educate workers and organizers about legal rights.
Students interested in applying for this Peggy Browning Fellowship should be comfortable interacting with workers in a union organizing context, conducting interviews and other research on potential legal claims, and helping attorneys assemble information needed to bring claims and cases. Experience working with both lawyers and union organizers is preferred. The successful candidate will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish, be detail-oriented, energetic, and have a commitment to organizing low-wage immigrant workers.
The stipend for this ten-week fellowship will be $450 per week. Funding for this fellowship is provided by an endowment grant from the Steelworkers Charitable and Educational Organization in honor of the distinguished service of James English, Carl Frankel, and Millie Ranich - long-time members of the USW Legal Department. This grant by the SCEO was made possible by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
