D.C. Employment Justice Center

Washington, DC

The D.C. Employment Justice Center (EJC) protects and promotes the legal rights of low-wage workers in the D.C. metro area. To ensure that all workers receive fair treatment in the workplace, the EJC uses experienced employment law attorneys and policy advocates to provide high-quality, free legal advice and assistance to low-wage workers and to push for changes in workplace fairness laws. With our combined focus on legal services, advocacy and education, there is no stronger voice for the legal rights of low-wage workers in the D.C. metro area.

The Peggy Browning Fellow will have an opportunity to do legal work and potentially to engage in the organizing, advocacy, and education efforts of the EJC.

The Fellow will support the EJC attorneys in any ongoing litigation in which they are engaged, interview clients, conduct legal research, and prepare legal memoranda on novel issues of law. The Fellow will also participate in the EJC’s weekly Workers’ Rights Clinics, in which he or she will interview workers regarding their individual workplace legal problems, discuss these issues with experienced employment lawyers, convey legal advice to the client from the attorneys and, under the supervision of the attorneys, assist clients in drafting letters and/or any other legal documents necessary for them to pursue their claims.

In addition, the Fellow may have an opportunity to support the EJC’s legislative campaigns and organizing program by assisting EJC staff in conducting organizing meetings, generating turnout for actions, meeting with leaders in the workers’ rights arena, and/or strategizing about actions.

Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

The Peggy Browning Fellow will be supervised by one or more of the EJC attorneys and will receive one week of formal orientation and training.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $5,000. The EJC will supplement the $4,500 available through the Peggy Browning Fund with an additional $500 to bring the total up to this amount.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a 3-5 page legal writing sample and 2 to 3 references.
