Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)

Legal Department
Washington, DC

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (“LIUNA”) represents nearly 500,000 members in more than 400 Local Unions across the United States and Canada. LIUNA members work in a variety of fields, from construction and mail handling to government service and health care. The Legal Department litigates cases on behalf of the International Union, handles issues arising under a number of federal statutes, and plays a role in a variety of internal union affairs. The Department also provides leadership training at the National Labor College and collaborates with other unions to build a stronger labor movement.

The fellowship program in the LIUNA Legal Department provides law students with a unique insight into the practice of union-side labor law and the labor movement generally. Law students often play an essential role in the day-to-day activities of the Legal Department and conduct research and writing on a wide range of labor and employment law topics. The Legal Department is accepting applications from law students with a strong interest in labor relations and employment law for a full-time paid Summer 2012 fellowship. Excellent research and writing skills a must.

The stipend for this fellowship will be at least $19.00 per hour commensurate with skill and experience.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a legal writing sample and transcript (when available).
