UNITE HERE Local 2 is considered one of the most progressive and innovative unions in the nation. Local 2 represents approximately 90% of the workers in major hotels in San Francisco and continues to organize to maintain and improve union density in the hotel industry. Because of this power, Local 2 is able to obtain some of the highest standards in the nation for hotel workers and to negotiate for innovative benefits such as a child/elder care fund, a legal fund and an AIDS benefit for our members who are HIV positive. In addition, Local 2 and our parent union, UNITE HERE International Union, are among the forerunners in defending immigrant rights and advocating on behalf of immigrant workers who comprise a majority of our members in San Francisco. The Peggy Browning Fund Fellow will work directly with the attorney in charge of the Grievance Department. The Fellow will be assigned to such tasks as:
- Researching NLRB law, as well as Federal case law, in order to defend the union and prosecute employers;
- Preparing memos and advising staff and members on aspects of immigration law, worker's compensation, disability law, unemployment law, wage and hour law and other employment law issues;
- Preparing for arbitrations including interviewing witnesses, writing memos, developing case theories and outlines and participating at hearings (if scheduled);
- Participating in the Collective Bargaining porcess by assisting in preparing for negotiations and, if scheduled, observing the actual bargaining process;
- Attending all staff meetings and participating in all union "actions."
The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $4,500.
