The SEIU is the leading advocate for the rights of low wage workers in the American labor
movement. Through the Justice for Janitors campaign and its campaign for Dignity, Rights
and Respect for nursing home workers, SEIU has developed and put into practice innovative
strategies for organizing workers, forcing employers to respect employment and labor rights
and pushing the concerns of workers to the forefront of public debate.
Today SEIU is leading the way in organizing in the health care industry. With the affiliation of 1199, the New York based health care and human services union, SEIU becomes the largest health care union in the country. Building on this foundation, SEIU has embarked on a series of major health care organizing campaigns targeting hospitals in major healthcare markets throughout the country. In each of these projects, and in other campaigns sponsored by SEIU Local Unions, lawyers in the International Union's legal department provide litigation support and research back-up for the local organizers. Members of the legal department staff have been involved in cases before the National Labor Relations Board; in drafting legislation protecting workers who speak out against their employers on matters of public concern and prohibiting employers who violate federal labor laws from receiving government contracts; and in implementing legal strategies to defend workers' rights under federal and state laws, including, for example, the FLSA and OSHA. The Peggy Browning Fund Summer Intern will be an integral part of the legal department and play an important role in implementing the union's program. The summer intern will work directly with attorneys in the legal department and professional staff at the International Headquarters. Assignments will focus primarily on research and writing. Students interested in applying to the Service Employees International Union for a Peggy Browning Fund internship should submit an application package and writing sample to:
