The Sheet Metal Workers' International Association is a building trades union dedicated to protecting and enhancing the rights of journeymen, apprentices, and production workers employed in the sheet metal industry throughout the US and Canada. The current administration has placed increased emphasis on organizing and improving union density. The SMWIA is over 100 years old with 102 building trades local unions and 22 production local unions, plus local unions with railroad and shipyard workers. A Peggy Browning Fund Summer Intern will work for a variety of departments on an as-needed basis, although primarily the legal, organizing and production departments. He or she will help in a variety of tasks, including researching NLRB and federal case law, preparing memos and advising staff on aspects of labor and employment law, assisting local unions with processing of grievances towards arbitration, and participating in organizing campaigns. The intern also may assist with education, research, communications and government affairs projects. He or she will attend hearings before the national joint labor-management arbitration board for the sheet metal industry.
