The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) is a national union
representing private and public sector workers throughout the United States. The UE
is one of the original CIO Unions and has maintained its progressive, rank and file
stance since it was founded in the 1930s. The National Union's Legal Department provides
advice and legal support to the UE's national officers, staff and locals.
Depending on the interests and skill of the intern, s/he will do legal research, write memos, positions statements and briefs on a broad range of private and public sector labor issues, prepare statements and affidavits for unfair labor practice proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, and assist in preparing staff/member training material on immigrant rights, bankruptcy, plant sales and related issues. A high priority for the Union, and one in which the intern would be involved, is updating our material on the rights of immigrant workers, including undocumented workers, to cover recent developments in labor law and to reflect strategies to organize and represent these workers in the current climate. The UE Legal Department consists of two attorneys and a paralegal, working in a busy, informal office. We have an excellent labor and employment law library and access to WESTLAW and LEXIS. The intern will be trained in labor research and will be directly supervised by the General Counsel. S/he will have the opportunity to participate in staff meetings and training; both attorneys are available to answer questions; formal one-to-one supervision will be scheduled on a weekly basis.
