UNITE is a 250,000 member international union, with members throughout
the United States and Canada. UNITE's membership is concentrated in the
textile and garment industries, industrial laundries, distribution
centers and other industries.
UNITE's Organizing Department is one of the most active in North America. Our focus is most often organizing low-wage workers, very often women, immigrants and people of color. UNITE uses a wide range of organizing tactics in such campaigns as Fieldcrest Cannon (successful NLRB election campaign, including special remedies for unfair labor practices, for 5,000 textile workers in North Carolina), Up To Date Laundry (successful recognition and first contract strike aided by discrimination complaints) and Royal Airline Laundries (successfully organized 500 workers at 8 locations around the country spearheaded by exposure of consumer safety issues). A Peggy Browning Fund summer intern's assignments would include support work for the International's Organizing Department through legal writing and research and, where appropriate, witness interviews and participation in hearings, arbitrations and/or negotiations. The intern would work at the International's headquarters and be able to interact with workers and International staff in different departments. The intern would work in the International's Legal Department with UNITE' s General Counsel and staff attorneys. The intern may work on issues in all aspects of labor law, with a likely concentration on the National Labor Relations Act. Students interested in applying to UNITE for a Peggy Browning Fund internship should submit an application package to
