The United Steelworkers of America was established in 1942 and has over 700,000 members in over 2,000 affiliated local unions throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. The membership is employed in a variety of industries, including basic steel and allied ferrous and nonferrous metals, aluminum, rubber, plastics, fabricating, container, public utilities, clerical, shipping, chemical, sporting goods, health care, transportation and service. The Union's Legal Department is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Staff attorneys are also based in field offices in Akron, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois, as well as in the Canadian National Office in Toronto, Ontario. Legal Department attorneys serve as lead counsel in cases arising in the federal courts, before government agencies, and in firms serving as district counsel. Further, attorneys participate, as needed, in major collective bargaining negotiations, organizing drives, safety and health endeavors, legislative activities, educational programs, internal election procedures, other internal legal affairs, and in a legal advisory capacity to the officers, directors and staff at headquarter and field levels. The Peggy Browning Fund summer intern would assist Legal Department attorneys in all aspects of the Union's legal affairs, including litigation, arbitration, collective bargaining and in providing the Union with day-to-day advice and counseling, through legal research and writing. Moreover, law clerks will have direct contact with the Union's staff representatives and local union officers, as the summer intern will be called upon to assist attorneys in fact-finding and case-assessment tasks. Furthermore, if scheduled, the summer intern may attend depositions, hearings, and oral arguments. Lastly, each summer the Union tries to arrange a tour of a basic steel mill in the Pittsburgh area. Supervision and guidance will be provided by the assigning attorney in order to assure the successful completion of the assignment.
