VERMONT LEGAL AID, INC. POVERTY LAW PROJECT: A Statewide Legal Services Program with offices in Rutland, Springfield, Montpelier, Burlington and St. Johnsbury

The Poverty Law Project (PLP) of Vermont Legal Aid (VLA) is seeking a summer intern to work in either its Montpelier or Rutland office. Vermont Legal Aid is a statewide program with offices in 5 locations. (The internship could be arranged at any one of VLA's offices where a mentor is available). A summer internship in the Poverty Law Project would provide the intern the opportunity to be a part of an exciting, friendly, proactive legal services program as well as the chance to gain a wide range of experience from research to drafting of pleadings and briefs to direct handling of one or more unemployment compensation hearings.

The Poverty Law Project has recently added employment law to its practice. We are seeking the assistance of a legal intern to help us develop legal resources and knowledge that we can use in pursuing employment law claims. We expect that by the end of the internship, the intern will have helped develop a comprehensive employment manual for in-house use and given editorial and substantive input into the content of the employment section of our new website. The intern will also assist us in research and pleading development on a project to reform the state's enforcement of wage and hour laws, assist our Disability Law Project on pending employment discrimination litigation and will hopefully have an opportunity to handle one or more administrative hearings in unemployment compensation cases.

The Rutland and Montpelier offices each have 2 PLP attorneys. The director is also in Montpelier. Statewide, the Poverty Law Project has 15 lawyers and a paralegal. Poverty Law advocates are in daily communication with each other. Vermont Legal Aid is fortunate to have a very experienced staff of 34 lawyers and 5 paralegals, thus the intern would be able to draw on the experience of resources beyond his or her individual mentor. Karen Richards is the Director of the Poverty Law Project and would provide overall supervision. Day to day supervision and mentoring would be provided by one of the PLP attorneys in the Rutland or Montpelier office. Mentoring and supervision will consist of regular meetings with the intern, general availability to answer questions or provide day to day guidance, review of written materials, inclusion in relevant meetings within VLA and with other organizations, and assistance in preparation for and actual handling of any administrative hearings.

Vermont Legal Aid is an equal opportunity employer.
