SEIU Local 49

Portland, Oregon

Peggy Browning Fund welcomes SEIU 49 to our 2020 program. This is the 2020 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

SEIU Local 49 is a union of more than 15,000 members throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Our members work in a variety of facilities in the healthcare, security, custodial and service industries. Healthcare members include licensed practical nurses, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists, nursing assistants, phlebotomists, laboratory assistants, curtomer service representatives, food service workers, housekeeping and many other healthcare classifications. SEIU Local 49 members also work as security officers and janitors for building service contractors, custodians for public schools and universities, window washers, laundry workers, and more.

The Peggy Browning Fellow will conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda for the local's innovative strategic contract campaigns, organizing non-union workers, and raising employment standards for all workers. The Fellow may work with the In-House Counsel on litigation, administrative proceedings, including the NLRB, attend hearings, and meet union leaders and union members.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a brief writing sample and academic transcript (when available). Applicants should indicate if they are bilingual in languages spoken by the local's members: Spanish, Russian, or Vietnamese. Please indicate if you have completed coursework in Labor and Employment law.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $6,000.
