This is the 2021 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

The National Legal Advocacy Network (NLAN) is a legal non-profit organization that works alongside worker advocates and organizers to empower marginalized workers through strategic litigation, worker center support and movement focused lawyering. NLAN seeks to support the movement for economic, racial and gender justice by building a base of experienced and principled movement lawyers throughout the country; partnering with worker centers to implement hybrid legal and organizing strategies to build worker power; coordinating strategic litigation within an industry or that crosses low-wage industries; providing legal analysis on legislative policies; and directly litigating cases on behalf of low-wage workers fighting for fairness and dignity at work.

NLAN Attorneys are currently based in Chicago, IL and Philadelphia, PA.

A Peggy Browning Fellow will participate in all aspects of NLAN’s work, subject to the needs of the organization. We expect that the Fellow’s work would include:

  • Legal research and writing
  • Assisting with discovery and court filings
  • Participating in client intakes, interviews and depositions
  • Developing and conducting presentations on workers' rights
  • Coordinating with organizers and worker advocates to ensure effective collaboration
  • Identifying and building relationships with value aligned attorneys

This position is remote, but the Fellow may have opportunities to attend in person meetings and events if they are based in Chicago or Philadelphia and public health circumstances permit it.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a legal writing sample. A strong commitment to workers’ rights and racial justice is required. Preferred but not required: 2Ls, labor law course(s), language skills (especially Spanish), organizing experience.
