This is the 2019 fellowship description for this organization. This fellowship has been awarded to Juan Barragan-Rangel from Stanford University School of Law.

The California Teachers Association (CTA) Legal Department is now accepting applications and interviewing 2nd year law students to fill a Peggy Browning Fellowship during the summer of 2019 at CTA's Headquarters in Burlingame, California (approximately 15 minutes south of San Francisco).  The fellowship provides generous pay, a friendly and collegial working environment, and opportunities to work on emerging issues in labor and education law.

CTA is one of California's largest professional employee unions and represents public school teachers and other public education employees throughout the state.  The Legal Department's work involves representing CTA, its chapters, and its members in all facets of labor law and education law, including court litigation to enforce statutory, constitutional and contractual rights; unfair labor practice administrative proceedings; arbitrations; legislative matters; and a wide variety of advice and policy matters.

The Peggy Browning Fellow will perform legal research and writing in all of the areas mentioned above. The Fellow will work closely with CTA's attorneys and will advise CTA organizers and staff on an expansive range of issues related to union activities, collective bargaining, and educators' employment.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Completion of two years of law school by summer 2018
  • Strong interest in representing labor unions
  • Completion of a course in labor law or employment law preferred

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a legal writing sample.

CTA will provide additional compensation to the Peggy Browning Fellow beyond the minimum stipend of $600/week.
