Adelante Alabama Worker Center

Birmingham, AL

This is the 2022 fellowship description for this mentor organization. The position has been filled.

Adelante is a grassroots non-profit organization based in metro Birmingham, Alabama that unites low-wage and immigrant workers and their families to defend their rights, promote their dignity, and pursue justice for all. We are a membership-based organization led by and for low-wage workers. Our legal work is based in a law and organizing philosophy, whereby lawyers work closely with community organizers and directly affected individuals to pursue legal representation and advocacy efforts that advance social movements and promote systemic change from the bottom up. Adelante was founded in 2014 as a project of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. A Peggy Browning Fellowship with Adelante will be an exciting opportunity to work with a small, dynamic organization on the front lines of the struggle for social and economic justice in the South.

Adelante’s current docket includes wage and hour litigation on behalf of low-wage workers in state and federal court, U Visa petitions on behalf of victims of workplace abuses, removal defense cases in immigration court, and open records requests seeking disclosure of information on local law enforcement practices that affect immigrant workers and their families. The Fellow will work directly with Adelante’s Legal and Policy Director, assisting with legal research and writing, drafting court filings and other documents, preparing Know Your Rights documents and workshops, conducting fact investigation, meeting with clients, and preparing for hearings, settlement negotiations, press conferences and public actions in connection with our cases and campaigns. The Fellow will work alongside labor activists, community organizers, and Adelante members.

Qualifications: Strong legal research and writing skills, commitment to social justice and public interest law, self-driven and comfortable with an informal and non-hierarchical work environment. Ability to speak and understand Spanish preferred.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $7,000.
