Cary Kane LLP

New York, NY

This is the 2019 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

Founded fifteen years ago, Cary Kane was established with the intention of making it an exceptional law for working people and their organizations.  We are AV rated.  With nine attorneys, the firm has three practice areas:  1) union representation, 2) employee representation, and 3), pension and welfare fund representation.

Cary Kane's attorneys represent employees with claims against their employer of discrimination, sexual harassment, or other improper treatment in violation of law.  Our lawyers represent workers not being paid their tips, commissions or minimum, prevailing, and overtime wages. We review severance and other employment agreements for executives, managers and professionals. We arbitrate and litigate breach of non-compete or confidentiality clauses in employment contracts.  Our employee benefits attorneys represent retirees seeking retirement and pension benefits under ERISA. Our law firm represents labor unions in every aspect of labor-management relations:  collective bargaining, and arbitration of grievances, NLRB charges and representation elections, federal court litigation, and internal union affairs. We counsel welfare and pension plans about proper benefit fund administration.  We handle actions filed against fund fiduciaries alleging breach of fiduciary duty and failure to pay a benefit.

The Peggy Browning Fellow is given the opportunity to do real life work on real cases beyond simply doing research or cite checking. We make an effort to get the law clerk out of the office once a week to observe in real time the work we do.  We also prefer that the law clerk have an opportunity to draft a research memo or argument that may serve as a writing sample.

Only rising 3L students please.  Desire to work part-time during the third year a plus.  Having labor, employment or ERISA coursework or experience is a plus, but must demonstrate interest in one or more of our practice areas.

In addition to the basic application requirements (cover letter, application form, essays, resume), applicants for this fellowship must also include a transcript.

The stipend for this ten-week fellowship is $900/week.
