We are pleased to welcome the Engineers and Scientists of California, Local 20, IFPTE as a new mentor organization. This is the 2019 fellowship application for this mentor organization. This fellowship has been awarded to Matthew Erle from University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

Clerkship Position Opening for Summer 2019

The Engineers and Scientists of California, Local 20, IFPTE is looking for a law clerk interested in labor or employment law and a desire to help and advocate for workers, for a ten-week Peggy Browning Fellowship during the summer of 2019. This is a full time job, 35-40 hours per week.

The Local

Local 20 represents more than 7,000 professional and technical workers throughout mostof California, including optometrists, clinical lab scientists and engineers.  The Union Hall is located in Old Town Oakland and is a short distance from the 12th Street BART Station.

The Union's Legal Work

The local's legal work includes representing the union and union members in discipline and contract arbitrations and in NLRB and PERB litigation related to new organizing, collective bargaining and unfair labor practices.  The legal staff advises Union staff regarding various employment laws including leave laws, discrimination laws, workers compensation and Cal-OSHA regulations.  The legal staff also prepares trainings regarding labor and employment issues and presents those trainings to union staff and union members.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a law student committed wo workers' rights.

Some of What the Law Clerk Can Expect

Exposure to arbitration hearings, administrative hearings, settlement negotiations, brief writing, preparing witnesses, drafting direct exams, cross exams and opening statements.  The Peggy Browning Fellow will also be exposed to contract negotiations and the structure of unions.


The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $6,000. The local union will provide housing for the student near the Local 20 office.
