We are pleased to welcome District Council 1707, AFSCME as a new mentor organization.  This is the 2019 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

District Council 1707, AFSCME, AFL-CIO (DC 1707) is a union representing workers employed primarily by private, not-for-profit organizations in the social service field.  Our union represents approximately 30,000 employees working for day care and Head Start centers, home care agencies, social work agencies, schools for children and adults with various special needs and other social service organizations primarily in the New York metropolitan area.

DC 1707 is creating a new Legal Department that will be handling contract negotiations, arbitrations, National Labor Relations Board matters and all other aspects of private sector union representation of the day-to-day workings of a dynamic and growing union.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Assist the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel in all legal matters;
  • Draft requests for information, position statements, and other general legal correspondence;
  • Work with and advise staff representatives and staff organizers in grievance handling, contract negotiations and other representation matters;
  • Assist in drafting arbitration demands, investigatin, and preparing witnesses and cases;
  • Assist in handling unfair labor practice charges and advocate at NLRB proceedings;
  • Perform legal research;
  • Participate in meetings of affiliated Taft-Hartley health and welfare funds and pension fund meetings.

The stipend for this fellowship will be $20/hour.
