About Our Honoree Educators Campaign The successful Educators Campaign by United Teachers Los Angeles was held in 2019. Their unity on the picket lines resulted in tremendous contract and policy victories. The strike made them stronger as a union for future struggles, connected them with parents in ways they’ve never seen before, and fundamentally shifted the narrative on public education in the United States. What they won was an agreement that’s a paradigm shift away from privatization and towards reinvestment in public education. They also helped to inspire a new wave of union activism in support of public education across the country. Some of the items included in the agreement were: • a 6% retroactive pay raise with no contingencies • hard caps on class size and reductions every year • a nurse in every school five days a week and a librarian in all secondary schools • commitment to reduce testing by 50% • more rights for public district schools in charter co- locations • progress on common good demands on limiting random searches, expandinggreen space and supporting immigrant families The strike took six days with 50,000+ picketing, marching and forming human chains in all weather – rain or shine. Over 1,000 firefighters marched in support with over 80% community support.
