Workers Defense Project (WDP) is seeking a full-time Houston Policy Coordinator to lead the policy work and advocacy conducted by WDP’s Better Builder® and Policy Department in the greater Houston area.

 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and strategic thinker with a background in public policy, political campaigns, and/or community organizing. The Houston Policy Coordinator should have strong communication skills that allow them to build relationships and foster cooperation with WDP members, other WDP staff, elected officials, and a diverse array of community and industry stakeholders. Finally, a strong candidate should be committed to WDP’s identity as a membership-based organization and be eager to leverage integrated campaign strategies to further WDP’s policy agenda, expand WDP’s Better Builder® Program, and build worker power.

Workers Defense Project is a statewide membership-based immigrant and workers’ rights organization that builds power for construction workers in Texas. Since its founding in 2002, the organization has gained notoriety for its ability to translate direct services and grassroots organizing into concrete policy wins. The New York Times named WDP as “one of the most creative organizations for immigrant workers in the country”. Through its flagship Better Builder® Program, WDP concentrates its efforts on winning better working conditions in the construction industry, which is one of the largest industries, and consequently most powerful special interest groups, in Texas.

 

Job Responsibilities

The Houston Policy Coordinator, who is based in Houston, TX, is responsible for the following:

  • Coordinating with statewide Better Builder® and Policy staff, and other WDP staff to design and manage campaigns aimed at raising standards within the local commercial and public construction industry, and to expand participation in the Better Builder® Program;
  • Cultivating strong working relationships with local policy makers, ally community and faith organizations, construction industry leaders, and other coalition partners, to support local policy efforts and campaigns, and encourage increased participation in the Better Builder® Program;
  • Leading local policy efforts, as assigned, aimed at raising workplace standards, protecting immigrant communities, and advancing other strategic campaigns in conjunction with key stakeholders;
  • Tracking local political and industry trends to identify opportunities to develop new stakeholder partnerships and launch strategic campaigns;
  • Collaborating with WDP organizing staff to engage WDP members and local construction workers in WDP’s campaigns and political advocacy;
  • Representing WDP in meetings with coalition partners, funders, and the media, as needed; and
  • Additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

We’re seeking candidates who are critical thinkers, take initiative, and thrive in a work environment that is both collaborative and fast-paced. A successful candidate will be a “people person” who also possesses both the political and management acumen required to navigate complicated relationships and work in diverse coalitions to move projects forward and achieve their stated goal. Because WDP is, at its core, a movement building organization, candidates should demonstrate an ability to develop and implement campaigns that combine communications and organizing strategies with traditional policy advocacy. You should have:

  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • One year previous experience in policy (state or local), organizing, and coalition building (required);
  • Bachelor’s degree (required), Master’s degree in Public Policy (preferred);
  • Two years of community, labor, or similar organizing or campaigns experience;
  • Experience managing different responsibilities, delegating tasks, and supporting the success of a team;
  • Proven ability to think strategically, act assertively when necessary, and speak confidently in public;
  • Excellent writing, research, and oral communication skills (required);
  • Superior leadership, critical thinking, and strategic planning skills; persuasive speaker (required);
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to fight for the rights of workers, and a commitment to social justice (required);
  • Basic computer literacy, e.g. PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, the internet (required);
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including occasional evenings and weekends (required);
  • An insured vehicle and valid driver’s license;
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (spoken and written) (preferred);
  • Existing relationships to key policymakers, civic engagement, and immigrant and workers’ rights stakeholders in the region (desired);
  • Willing to put in extra time and effort to meet urgent deadlines (required);
  • Previous management and supervisory experience (preferred);
  • Any other duties required to carry out the work of WDP.

Previous experience engaging in local or state-level policy advocacy is a plus, as is strong proficiency reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish.

Compensation depends on experience and is highly competitive.
