The Organization of Staff Analysts (OSA) is a labor union that represents over five-thousand professional employees working for the City of New York. OSA has a long-standing reputation for being at the forefront of progressive movements and advancements in worker rights.
In this role, you will be an integral part of the union's legal, negotiations, and grievance teams, providing comprehensive support on various employment, labor, and civil service law matters.
Responsibilities:
- Contract Negotiations: Participate as a member of the contract negotiations team, providing legal expertise, conducting research, and contributing to the development of bargaining strategies. Assist in drafting proposals, reviewing contract language, and analyzing the potential impact of proposed changes.
- Grievance Handling: Collaborate with the grievance team to investigate, analyze, and resolve member grievances. Assist in preparing documentation, evidence, and arguments for grievance hearings and arbitrations.
- Administrative Agency Proceedings: Manage and represent union members in proceedings before administrative agencies, such as labor boards, human rights commissions, and civil service commissions. Prepare and submit legal briefs, motions, and other necessary documents.
- Legal Assistance: Offer guidance and support to union members and staff by analyzing and interpreting employment, labor, and civil service laws, regulations, and policies. Provide advice on individual employment issues, collective bargaining agreements, and contract interpretation.
- Legal Research and Analysis: Stay updated on developments in employment, labor, and civil service laws and regulations. Conduct thorough legal research, analyze case law, and prepare memoranda to support the union's positions and strategies.
Requirements:
- Proven interest in worker rights and a strong commitment to social and economic justice.
- Experience in labor law, employment law, or related fields, with a focus on representing unions or workers' rights preferred.
- Excellent advocacy skills, both in written and oral communication, to effectively present arguments and convey complex legal concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strong research and analytical abilities to interpret laws, regulations, and legal precedents and apply them in a labor union context.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, including interacting with union leadership, members, and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and Admission to the New York State Bar preferred but not required.
