Job Summary
The School of Labor and Employment Relations invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track position of Assistant Teaching Professor of Labor and Employment Law, assigned to the Labor Education Program. This is a 12-month education program that offers labor studies and employment rights education to union members, unrepresented workers, and university undergraduates.
The position is for a full-time and permanent appointment, subject to the University’s annual reappointments for all faculty members. The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
This position is based in the Chicago offices of the Labor Education Program. Considerable travel around the state of Illinois is required, and online teaching may also be required. There is the possibility of a courtesy appointment (subject to faculty approval) or other collaboration with the Illinois College of Law at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop non-credit courses in private and public sector labor and employment law to union and non-union workers.
  • Teach grievance processing, arbitration, and collective bargaining classes.
  • Develop and teach new curricula with a focus on workplace discrimination (racial, gender, LGBTQ) and gender violence/sexual harassment for union and non-union workers.
  • May also teach on-line/hybrid credit courses to UIUC undergraduates.
  • May also assist in conducting research and writing applied policy reports.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree (JD preferred, or PhD in an appropriate social science discipline or professional area of study).
  • At least 3 years of teaching/training experience in the labor law, immigration law, or employment rights field, or equivalent years practicing labor law with some teaching/training experience.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in developing new curricula/training programs is a plus.
  • Experience in online teaching is welcome but not necessary.
  • Spanish fluency welcome but not necessary.


Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/16/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.
