About Our Honoree Nicole Hunt Nicole Hunt is president of UniteHere Local 634, the union that represents food service workers and student climate staff in the Philadelphia School District. Sister Hunt started out as a food service worker in the school district in 2001. She was encouraged to join the union by her mother, Christine Hunt, who was a proud member of 1199c at Temple University Hospital for over 30 years. Nicole learned the important principals of respect, the dignity of work and helping others from her mother. Starting as a volunteer organizer for the union in 2008, Nicole has held various positions including office manager and executive board member. In 2009, when UniteHere was raided by Workers United, Nicole played a key role in organizing the labor board vote which guaranteed that Local 634 would stay within UniteHere. Nicole ran for secretary treasurer of the Local in 2010 and won a contested election. In2013,when the school district laidoff all of the1,200Noon Time Aides, who were part of Local 634, Nicole participated in a hunger strike along with numerous other UniteHere Local 634 and Local 274 members to successfully force the governor to increase financial aid to the district’s budget which enabled the district to recall 100% of the laid off workers. The fast was held outside of Governor Corbett’s office in Philadelphia for almost three weeks. In 2017 Nicole was elected president of Local 634. She sits on the General Executive Board of the International Union and
