Neyhart, Anderson, Flynn & Grosboll

San Francisco, CA

This is the 2020 fellowship description for this organization.

Neyhart, Anderson, Flynn & Grosboll is the latest configuration of the union-side labor law firm founded by former California Supreme Court Justice Mathew O. Tobriner in 1935. After Justice Tobriner's departure, the firm was carried on by Stanley Neyhart and Joseph Grodin, who also later served on the California Supreme Court. Law clerks from our firm are now working as attorneys at many other Bay Area union-side labor law firms.

Since its inception, the members of the firm have been engaged exclusively in the practice of Labor Relations law for union clients, Trust Fund law for labor-management employee benefit funds, apprenticeship training programs and the representation of individual employees in employment matters. We primarily represent unions and trust funds in the transit and building trades sectors. Out practice is approximately 50% for unions and 50% for pension, health and apprenticeship trust funds. While remaining small, the firm has maintained a reputation for the highest quality of legal representation for its clients.

We prefer law clerks who are interested and have a background in the labor movement. We have traditionally allowed law clerks to work on a variety of projects, including attending at least one arbitration and court hearing(s). In the past, our law clerks have worked on arbitrations, wage and hour cases, ERISA regulatory compliance issues, policies for apprentice programs, and other issues as they arise.

We cannot anticipate the projects which will arise during the fellowship, but any law clerk will be tasked with legal work related to the firm’s work at that time.

We prefer applicants to have taken a labor law course. We require that applicants be available to work part-time in the fall and spring semesters following the summer (approximately 12 hours per week, but we are flexible with the demands of law school). In your cover letter, please specify that you are available for this additional time. We understand that this means applicants from law schools outside the commuting area cannot apply.

All five of our attorneys will work with and mentor the Peggy Browning Fellow.

The stipend for this fellowship will be $22 per hour.
