In Memorium - Richard L. Trumka

Monday, August 9th, 2021

A champion is gone. The day of his death was sad and dark. The passing of President Trumka is a loss for the entire labor movement and for workers and their families throughout this country. It was also a very personal loss for all of us here at the Peggy Browning Fund and for so many workers’ rights activists whom he supported throughout his career.

When we started in 1997, he was one of our earliest and most enthusiastic supporters. He delivered the keynote speech at our first annual National Law Students Workers’ Rights Conference, and over the years he came back to encourage our students. Of course, he always left them energized and inspired.

As years passed, we were honored and proud to partner with the AFL-CIO, under President Trumka’s leadership, to enlist bright, progressive law students, passionate about workers’ rights, to work as lawyers in the Labor Movement. He helped us accomplish much more than we would have without him, and we will forever be grateful.

He never forgot where he came from. He never forgot who he was fighting for. He never lost sight of where we need to go, and his leadership will continue to inspire us.

As his survivors, we must all work harder and better to realize his vision of union strength and growth.  We at Peggy Browning are up to that challenge and look forward to working with all of you to realize President Trumka’s dream of a strong Labor Movement.
